From the coast of São Paulo to the World: The Voice of Youth in a Digital Climate Observatory

The climate crisis is a complex issue, but the Youth Observatory on Climate Change has proven that the best way to understand it is through local stories. The project began in the Baixada Santista region and aimed to bring young people closer to the environmental impacts experienced in their own neighborhoods. The initiative showed that, with creativity and new tools, it is possible to transform reality and give a voice to those who suffer most from the consequences of climate change.
One of the most impactful results of the project was the documentary series Alagados, composed of three videos with testimonies from residents of the São Paulo coast. The interviews were conducted during the pandemic, with the innovative use of WhatsApp audios, which allowed capturing different generational perceptions about the rise in sea level. The initiative also promoted a climate infographic workshop for young people, who learned to translate complex data into accessible visual content. The material generated, facilitated by geographer Adriano Liziero and professor Larissa Maciel, was shared on the Visual Geography website and reached almost 2,000 people.
The Observatory's legacy, however, went even further. The project spurred the creation of Geopanoramas, one of the only content channels in Brazil that combines aerial images with a critical view of geography, sustainability, and the world. Today, the Instagram page has accumulated over 105,000 followers and 570 posts, offering global data analysis and becoming a reference in climate and environmental education.
