Amazon Lowlands

Amazônia Baixadeira is a program of the Instituto Baixada that promotes climate justice in the Baixada Maranhense region through local solutions, addressing climate change and combating environmental racism. The initiative strengthens the autonomy of traditional communities and promotes sustainable practices, connecting local knowledge to political advocacy and the construction of just alternatives for the territory. The program strengthens community participation in the construction of environmental public policies, implements sustainable practices such as environmental management, agroecology, and solidarity economy, and promotes education for climate justice and social mobilization. Furthermore, it fosters strategic networks and partnerships to expand political advocacy, supports research and socio-environmental monitoring to generate data on the impacts of climate change and environmental racism in the region, and systematizes knowledge, valuing local wisdom and strengthening political advocacy based on evidence and community narratives. In the face of advancing climate change and socio-environmental inequalities, Amazônia Baixadeira establishes itself as a concrete and territorially-based response, connecting political struggle, community knowledge, and sustainable solutions. Climate justice demands the leadership of the most impacted populations, and the program focuses on strengthening their voices as a central element to transform the present and build a fairer future for the Baixada Maranhense region.
